It can feel like a real-life Tetris game trying to fit everything into a small kids' bedroom. Between the toys, clothes, books and school bags, floor space disappears fast. The good news is that the right bed does most of the heavy lifting, freeing up room to play, study and actually move around without tripping over things.
Here's a look at the best space-saving bed options for small kids' rooms, and how to choose the right one.
Measure before you do anything else
Before settling on a bed, grab a tape measure. A standard UK single bed is 90cm wide and 190cm long, and you need at least 60cm of clearance on one side to get around it comfortably and change the bedding without a struggle.
For raised beds, cabin beds, mid-sleepers and high sleepers, ceiling height matters too. You need at least 75cm of clear space above the mattress so your child can sit up without hitting their head. Measure where the bed will actually sit, not just in the middle of the room, as ceiling heights often vary.
A quick tip: use masking tape on the floor to mark out the bed footprint before you buy. It takes five minutes and avoids expensive mistakes.
Bunk beds: two children, one floor footprint
If two children are sharing a small room, a bunk bed is the obvious answer. Two sleeping spaces stacked vertically take up no more floor space than a single bed, which leaves the rest of the room free for play and storage.

A trundle bed pulls out from underneath a standard single to give you a second sleeping space, then rolls away neatly during the day. It's a useful option for children who have friends to stay regularly, but whose room isn't big enough to support a permanent bunk bed setup.

A few layout tips that make a real difference
Getting the right bed is the biggest decision, but how you arrange the rest of the room matters too:
- Put the bed along the longest wall to free up as much floor space as possible in front of it
- Wall shelves instead of a bookcase keep books and display items off the floor without taking up any floor space
- Cube storage sits low enough for children to reach themselves, which genuinely helps with tidying
- Light colours on the walls make small rooms feel bigger, save bold colours for bedding and accessories where they're easier to change
