High sleepers are best suited to children aged six and over who are confident climbers. They come into their own from around age eight or nine when homework, independent study, and having friends over all become a bigger part of daily life. Many families find a high sleeper extends the life of a smaller bedroom significantly, what felt cramped with a standard bed suddenly works well once the floor is clear.
Is your room suitable?
- Ceiling height is the key consideration. You need a minimum of 75cm clearance between the top of the mattress and the ceiling, but more is better — aim for at least 90cm for comfortable sitting up in bed
- Most high sleepers use a standard UK single mattress (90 x 190cm); some European single designs take a 90 x 200cm mattress — check before ordering
- Like all raised beds, the mattress depth matters. A mattress that's too thick reduces the effective height of the safety rail. GLTC recommends a maximum mattress depth of 15cm for high sleeper beds
Safety: All GLTC high sleeper beds are tested to BS EN 747 standards, with high safety rails, chunky anti-slip ladder treads and a five-year warranty included as standard.
