What makes a toddler bed different from a single bed?
Toddler beds are smaller than a standard single, designed to use a cot bed mattress (70 x 140cm) so the transition feels less daunting. The lower height means little ones can climb in and out independently, which matters a lot at 2am. Many designs include low side guards to prevent rolling out without making the bed feel caged in, reassuring for children used to the enclosed feeling of a cot.
How long will a toddler bed last?
Most toddler beds are suitable up to around age five or six, depending on the child's height and weight. At that point, the natural next step is a standard single bed. If you're buying on a tighter budget or space is limited, it's worth knowing that a single bed with a standard mattress can work from as young as age two, so some families skip the toddler stage altogether.
What to look for:
- Low to the ground — for safe, independent in-and-out access
- Side guards — partial guards are reassuring without being restrictive
- Solid wood or MDF construction — avoid lightweight flat-pack designs; toddlers are remarkably hard on furniture
- Coordinating storage — a small bookcase or toy box nearby turns the bed area into a complete, manageable space
All GLTC toddler beds are covered by a five-year warranty and designed to coordinate with our wider children's bedroom furniture range.
