With less than two weeks to go until Father's Day, we're here to lend a helping hand in case shopping for a gift hasn't made it to the top of your to do list yet. In fact, if your children follow our tutorial for this cute wallet and thoughtful gift cards, you needn't bother buying anything at all.
Here are the materials you need:
- Coloured cardstock
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Magnetic fastener
- Glue
- Credit card (for size only)
- Pen
Here are the simple steps:
STEP ONE
Choose the piece of cardstock that will form the main part of the wallet and cut it in to a rectangle shape measuring 30cm x 15cm, and fold it in half. Then cut a second piece from the same coloured cardstock measuring 8cm x 3cm.
STEP TWO
Fold the smaller piece of cardstock in half. This will form the clasp of the wallet. Glue the left hand side to the back of the wallet and then glue the smaller half of the magnetic fastener to the right hand side of it. Finally, glue the larger half of the magnetic fastener to the front of the card where it will match up to the smaller half when the clasp is closed.
STEP THREE
Cut three more pieces of cardstock - either the same colour or contrasting colours, it's entirely up to you - to form the inside pockets of the wallet. They should be shorter than an average credit card but wider - the ones pictured were 11cm x 5cm. This is so you have enough width to glue the sides and bottom of the pockets to the wallet but can still fit the gift cards in to them with the tops peeking out. Then glue them to the inside of the wallet - on the left or right hand side, your choice - so that they ever so slightly overlap.
STEP FOUR
Next, it's time to make the gift cards to sit inside the pockets. It could be a lie in, breakfast in bed, a day of uninterrupted sports watching, or lunch at the local pub. Whatever means the most to your children and the things they'd wish for or like to do with their dad.
STEP FIVE
Add a personal message inside the wallet and perhaps put a family passport photo or two in one of the pockets, just for fun.
Finally, pop your card in a drawer until it's time to hand over on June 16th. If you do decide to make one, don't forget to share a snap on instagram using the #mygltc hashtag.
