FIVE VEGETARIAN PIZZA TOPPINGS - COOKING WITH KIDS

Even the picky eaters amongst us can't resist a slice of delicious, vegetable-topped pizza. It's ideal for a quick on-the-go snack for your child or as part of a larger meal. Even better if it's homemade - although, we won't judge if you don't want to make your own dough. Read on for our five favourite family-friendly vegetarian pizza toppings as well as a closer look at our award-winning* children's play café.

THE PICCOLO PLAY CAFE

If you haven't come across our Piccolo Play Café, it's a beautifully-made, wooden, table-top toy that offers endless opportunities for role play fun. A café come pizzeria (spin it around to pop your pizzas in to the wood-fired pizza oven with the mini pizza paddle), we think it's a winner for encouraging children to use their imagination, not to mention developing those all-important conversation skills as they take meal orders from their teddies or friends and family.

For £65, it comes with so many tactile accessories that children will love to play with. There's a little pepper mill that makes a true-to-life grinding sound, a mini cheese grater and piece of parmesan, pizza bases and lots of yummy toppings, as well as plates and dishes to serve everything up. And we think it's a great way of introducing children to helping out in the kitchen, especially as real-life pizzas are almost as easy to make as their pretend counterparts.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY VEGETARIAN PIZZA TOPPINGS

Want to get pizza-making with your little one? If you don't want to make your own dough, Jus-Rol Sourdough Pizza Base is not only delicious, it's simple to divide up in to mini portions and really easy for little ones to hand stretch or roll out. While perfectly round pizzas look lovely, we think you'll agree that there's a certain charm to more rustic-looking, hand-stretched versions.

To link our role play café with real life, why not mirror some of the toppings found in the Piccolo Play Café - tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers - along with some other family-friendly favourites, for example, olives, courgettes, and diced red onion, and let your children construct their own variations? It's a great way to get them to try toppings that they perhaps wouldn't gravitate towards normally.

Featuring a much-loved tomato base with slivers of creamy mozzarella (not all mozzarella is vegetarian, so double check before you buy), our three favourite family-friendly, vegetarian toppings are:

  1. Courgettes and red peppers
  2. Pitted black olives and a mix of red and orange peppers
  3. Mushrooms and cherry tomatoes

Pop them in the oven at 200 degrees for ten minutes and then share them around.

INSPIRED BY THE ALSACE REGION

For something a little bit different, why not try toppings inspired by the Alsace region? Tarte flambée - or Flammkuchen - is a speciality of Alsace and the Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz regions on the German-French border. Made from a thinly-rolled dough, it's then topped with crème fraîche, sliced onions and lardons. However, we left off the lardons and instead opted for a handful of fresh rocket and a grind of black pepper once out of the oven.

ONE FOR THE CHOCOLATE LOVERS

As a reward for dealing with all those pizza and pasta orders at the Piccolo Play Café, a sweet treat is definitely in order, don't you think? How about a mini Nutella pizza with fresh fruit? Simply stretch and bake your pizza dough and when cool enough, spoon on a generous dollop of your favourite chocolate spread. Add some thinly sliced strawberries, or perhaps raspberries or grapes, and sprinkle on some icing sugar for a final flourish. Voila!
