Behind The Scenes: The Autumn Winter 2018 Photo Shoot Part II

It pains us to say this out loud (or in type) but there has been a definite shift towards autumn over the past week or two, hasn't there? Cooling temperatures, leaves losing their vibrancy, and more and more of us sporting sweaters as opposed to sandals.

Here in the GLTC office, we're keeping our fingers crossed that the predicted Indian summer graces the UK during September and October but we're already starting to make our homes a touch cosier as the evenings draw in. Candles, blankets, heartier meals. What's not to love? Then there's the return of family favourites on the TV ... The Great British Bake Off, Strictly Come Dancing, X Factor. Will you be watching?

And something even more exciting (we think), is the launch of the Great Little Trading Co. autumn catalogue in just over a couple of weeks (although the eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted a few new products on the website already).

We took you behind the scenes of the photo shoot a few weeks ago, but now that the forest-themed Woodland duvet cover set with its beautiful mix of green trees and grey dashes has been released, we can finally show you a bit more.

AN EMPTY SPACE

We mentioned in our last post, that we like to use real family homes for our photo shoots as we think that it's important for you, our customers, to be able to see a product in a setting as close to your own home as possible. The rooms are mostly minimal when we arrive, but as you can see, they don't stay that way for long. We bring all of the furniture, accessories, props and decorations with us to transform the empty spaces in to cosy children's bedrooms and fantastic family living rooms.

BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE

Slowly but surely, beds are positioned and made, chests of drawers are manoeuvred, curtains are hung, shelves are fixed on walls, and rugs are placed underfoot. Sometimes, a little bit of trickery and magic is required to create the perfect room, like making sure the curtains are the right height for the shot but not necessarily the window. And occasionally products are initially put in place but then swapped out for an alternative. See if you can spot what's different in the room set up below to the final photos.

HANDMADE PROPS

Photographic stylist, Kerry (read our interview with Kerry to find out more about her role) chooses appropriate handmade props and touches for the room. These could be things that she's made specifically for the shoot, children's artwork, leaves and acorns for an autumnal touch, or books and toys.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Finally, it's time to smooth down the bedding, take a test shot, and then invite one of the amazing models to take a look around the room. We ask them to open drawers, check in cupboards, look under beds, and even jump on them. That's how we get lovely natural images of them playing in and exploring the rooms.

THE FINAL IMAGES

Here are the finished photos. What do you think? Doesn't the room look amazing? Can you spot what's different from the set up images above? A small clue ... look at the floor. Yes, we switched the Zigzag rug for the gorgeous Woodland one. It will be making its way on to the website very soon so stay tuned!
